Torah Ark Model

Contact Us
Archie Granot's model Torah Ark, completed in 2001, shows how beautifully his designs embrace the medium of sanctuary ornamentation. The model, which is 12 " high, is handcrafted from ebony, one of the most exotic woods mentioned in the Bible.

The exterior of the doors has been overlaid with copper that has been cut out and the inside of the doors has been overlaid with oxidized copper that has been etched but not completely cut out. The design for the overlay was recreated from one of Granot's original papercuts and has also been used to decorate the interior walls of the ark.

The original papercut was inspired by the letter Shin (the first letter of the name of G-d as well as of the word Shalom - peace) repeated in an asymmetrical and undulating pattern.

The text on the ark doors is part of the prayer chanted as the Torah scroll is returned to the ark: "Her ways (i.e. of the Torah) are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace." (Proverbs 3:17)
