The "Aleph" Papercut - Work 201

Contact Us
The text that forms the main emphasis of the work commences with the letter Aleph. As this is the first letter of both the Hebrew alphabet and of the Ten Commandments, it is suitable therefore that the golden Aleph that dominates this papercut incorporates ten layers of paper.

The text, from Psalms 128:1-3, reads: "... Happy is every one who fears the Lord; who walks in his ways. 2. For you shall eat the labor of your hands; happy shall you be, and it shall be well with you. 3. Your wife shall be like a fruitful vine in the recesses of your house; your children like olive shoots around your table." This verse, an idyllic vision of a pious life rewarded by the security and happiness of home and family, is recited in the Jewish home as part of the Havdallah - the ritual observance that divides between the Shabbat and the six working days.

The colors of the intricate design, which was inspired by illuminated manuscripts and into which the text has been inlaid, hint at the textures of parchment Torah scrolls.

Size: 13.3" x 12.6" (Frame Size: 38" x 27"). Year: 1989. 26 layers cut paper.
